Victorian Family Fun Day
Aug 19th 11:00 am - 5:00 pm
The 'Ragged Victorians – ‘The Great Unwashed' are an award winning living history group, re-enacting the lower classes of Victorian England, c1851.
They will be taking up residence over the weekend of Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th August at the Nothe Fort, where they will be ‘living’ in the tunnels and cellars under the Fort.
The "Ragged Victorians" offer a variety of characters and skills, that include street history at general events and fayres, educational talks (both first and third person to suit needs) and living history at historic sites. They can also provide specific activities within events, such as recreating a Victorian prize fight.
Back in the day when a shilling was a week’s wage, when even 'Pure' (Dogs Dung) was a valuable source of income, low class Victorians were living by whatever means they could. With no homes, no income and no benefit system for support, an honest day’s work could mean labouring the most degrading jobs in the world, for little or scant reward.
Our illustrious reputation for attention to detail, ensures we successfully capture an episode of history for you to experience. Second to none, our authentic impression of what life was like, in Victorian ruled England, c1851, has become world class
Find out more about our Victorians and experience the great unwashed community over this two dat period.
The Nothe Fort Victorian Artillery will be in attendance, firing their Victorian Cannons, following their inspection by Queen Victoria, at the start of the day!
Enjoy some Music Hall entertainment in the company of Marie Lloyd and other performers from the era, visit the Victorian School Room and take part in some traditional games and activities. Watch local artists recreating traditional crafts, and relax in the Nothe Café – hopefully in the sunshine! There will be activities around the fort for the children, and the exhibition of Matchstick Fleet will still be in residence.
Check out the Fort website for updates on what we have planned for the weekend.
