KS2 Evacuee Experience
Nothe Fort’s School Evacuee Experience offers a unique learning environment and is supported by additional materials to use back in the classroom.
The Evacuee Experience is perfect for supporting a local history study or the study of an aspect of British History. It also connects to KS2 Citizenship enabling children to make links between situations in different periods (WW2 and the current situation in Ukraine) and discuss topical issues.
We aim to deliver learning that enables the following to be achieved:
- To find out about and describe the everyday lives of men, women and children.
- To examine the results of great events and the impact these had on people.
- To understand that knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of sources.
- To use a wide range of different evidence and to select from relevant sections of information to address historically valid questions.
We can tailor our programme for any size of group between 18 and 36 children who, through our interactive role play situations, will:
- experience what it was like to be an evacuee billeted with a host,
- understand why rationing was introduced and how restrictive it was,
- learn how different doing the laundry was without a washing machine and compare a kitchen then with our modern spaces,
- role play in a wartime classroom using dipping pens and ink to write with and grappling with pounds, shillings and pence,
- have the option of experiencing the feeling of being in an Anderson shelter during an air-raid.
There will also be an opportunity to walk the Ramparts of Nothe Fort and take in the stunning views of Weymouth and Portland Harbour. This will enable the class to understand the unique defensive position of the Fort, its role in World War II and understand the different purposes of some of the guns in keeping the area safe.

I really felt I got a sense of what it must have been like to have been billeted in WWII
