Volunteer and Vacancies
Play an important role supporting a locally run heritage attraction.
In the 1980s Nothe Fort was saved from dereliction by the determination of the local community. Today Nothe Fort is a multi-awarding winning visitor attraction with approximately 74,500 visitors a year.
A team of over 120 Nothe Fort volunteers manage and operate Nothe Fort. There is a varied range of volunteer roles to suit everyone’s interests, abilities, and time commitment.
Nothe Fort volunteers are wonderful diverse group, but they all have the same thing in common – they have a positive attitude to life and are proud of Nothe Fort and of their community.
Volunteer Support
The Nothe Fort volunteer team are supported by the General Managers and Head of Visitor Services. We work hard to create a happy team who understand how much they are valued.
Activities include:
- Training and support to ensure you are comfortable in your role
- Regular communication through daily briefings and regular updates via newsletters
- Introduction of a new volunteer’s communication app
- Summer and Christmas party
- Volunteer outings during the closed season

Mary
The Front of House team are the backbone to Nothe Fort visitor services, and our visitors comment time and time again on their kindness and friendliness.
There are many varied tasks within this team so you can focus on one element, or move around to different roles depending on your interest.
Roles include:
- Operating Admission tills
- Supporting Children’s Mouse Desk
- Operating Shop Till
- Acting as orientation Steward
- Welcoming visitors at the entrance (in high season)
- Supporting family holiday activities and the events programme
The work undertaken by the maintenance team is absolutely essential to prevent Nothe Fort from falling into dereliction. Maintenance volunteers undertake a whole range of work to maintain and upgrade the fabric of the building and the displays.
This includes:
- Carpentry
- Electrical work
- Metal work
- Painting & cleaning
- Gardening
- Restoration work
- Surveyor
Nothe Fort Evacuee Experience volunteers run a very popular WWII programme based on life as an evacuee arriving at Weymouth. Roles include teacher, shopkeeper, air raid warden and kitchen and laundary.
Volunteers do not need to have previous teaching experience and will be supported by the team to develop confidence. Volunteers will initially work alongside existing team members before taking on a role.
Nothe Fort is a scheduled monument and also a designated museum with a collection of objects and documents, including a photographic collection. Over the next few years the curatorial team will be involved in an exciting redisplay.
The curatorial team roles include:
- Cataloguing objects
- Research
- Exhibition development
Our Graphics team support curatorial and visitor services by creating display material throughout the Fort. The graphics team are supported by a Nothe Fort style-guide and dedicated resources.
Activities include:
- Marketing posters & adverts
- Signage
- Holiday activities signage
- Temporary exhibitions
- Displays
The Nothe Fort Artillery volunteers are an adjunct to the Fort but have a very important role in our events calendar. They provide cannon and musket drill displays every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month throughout the year.
Our events programme has grown massively in the past few years and bring in many visitors. Each year we are trying to build these events, making them more exciting and unique and giving our visitors lasting memories of the Fort which will bring them back.
This role will assist in the planning and preparation of these events.
This role may include:
- Printing, cutting and laminating
- Researching craft activities
- Helping to decorate/set up
- Assisting on events
- Storing props and decorations
- Car park marshalling
Staff Vacancies
Events & Marketing Coordinator
We are looking for someone creative, fun and energetic to join the team, continuing to take our events and marketing programme to the next level.
During the next five years Nothe Fort will be implementing a development programme, which will be focusing on upgrading the building, displays and visitor experience. The Events & Marketing Coordinator will play a pivotal role in this journey and make a real difference to Nothe Fort, to our local community, and to Dorset.
Front of House Assistant (zero hours contract)
Nothe Fort is officially the Best Small Visitor Attraction in England and we are looking for someone special to join our award winning team as FRONT OF HOUSE ASSISTANT!
This is a very busy and varied role where you will make a real difference. You will be working as part of team to ensure that our visitors will have the best possible customer experience, and that Nothe Fort maximises it’s potential income.

Cleaner (zero hours contract)
The Nothe Fort cleaner is a highly valued member of staff, with many of our visitors commenting on how well looked after the Fort is.
We are looking for a cleaner to join the Nothe Fort team as soon as possible on a zero hours contract for this season (until November 2024).
The zero hours contract will equate to approximately 2-3 days a week.
