World War II Week in February Half-Term
Learn all about Weymouth in World War II this February Half Term!
Join us at the Fort as we travel back to the World War II era!
Come along and collect your job stamps as you experience what life was like during WWII.
Complete the wartime activities and collect job stamps as you find out all about WWII at the Fort!
Activities include:
• Royal Observer Corp Lookout
Saturday 15th, Sunday 16th, Monday 17th, & Thursday 20th Feb
Learn about the crucial role of the Royal Observer Corp and take up lookout duty to see if you can spot any incoming aircrafts.
• Abseil Descent Training | Monday 17th Feb
Take on the physical challenge of soldiers abseiling onto tough terrain in this abseiling activity provided by Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre.
Min age 8+ or 6+ subject to harness fitting.
• Soldier School | Wednesday 19th & Saturday 22nd Feb
Learn how to march in a drill conducted by the Reconnaissance Corp and the Young Reenactors Association. Marching Drills will be at 11:00am, 12:00pm, 1:30pm, and 2:30pm.
• Evacuee Postcard Writing | Wednesday 19th Feb
Write postcards and learn how post was sent to the soldiers on the Front Lines.
• Special Forces Climbing Wall | Thursday 20th Feb CANCELLED – NOW ADVENTURE CAVE
Due to weather conditions, we have had to cancel the climbing wall visit tomorrow, but South Coast Adventures Ltd are still attending! Come along and brave the Adventure Cave!
Helmets will be provided. Suitable for all ages!
• Evacuee Experience Talk | Tuesday 18th, Friday 21st Feb
Learn all about the experiences of Evacuees during World War II.
Log Book Activities Running Every Day :
• Junior Assault Course Training
Test your agility and strength on the assault course, inspired by the rigorous training faced by soldiers during WWII.
• Friend or Foe Plane Spotting
Help us identify enemy planes with the Friend or Foe game.
• Motorbike Dispatch Rider
See what it would have been like on a Dispatch Rider’s motorcycle.
• Anti-Aircraft Gun Operator
Step into the shoes of an anti-aircraft gun operator and defend the skies.
• Binoculars Factory Craft
Make your own pair of binoculars for lookout duty around the Fort.
• ARP Warden & Fire Warden (except Mon 17th and Thu 20th)
Learn about the vital roles played by ARP and Fire Wardens in safeguarding communities during air raids.
• Military Vehicles Saturday 15th, Sunday 16th – Dates subject to change
Learn all about the vehicles used during World War II.
• Signal Light Operator
Signal lights were used to defend against night-time bomber raids. See how it works!
• Lookout Duty
Use the binoculars to see enemy ships and use the rangefinder to work out their distance.
• Machine Gun Operator
Defend the Fort using the Machine Gun!
• Spigot Mortar Operator
Defend the Fort using the Spigot Mortar! These were intended as a means to equip the Home Guard in case of invasion!
• Communications Operator
During World War II, the military needed to send messages as quickly as possible. Have a go at Morse Code
• World War II Mouse Hunt!
Keep an eye out for themed mice characters hidden around the Fort!
