‘A String of Pearls’ for VE Day
Celebrating VE-Day 80 years with a thrilling string of stories & songs – WW2 through the eyes of women & children
Sunday 4 May 2025
2:00pm – 3:15pm
Produced by AsOne theatre company, featuring songs with: The Decadettes; & Grains of Hope (Ukrainian performance group)
A thrilling string of story-vignettes by AsOne theatre company devised from letters and emails received from women who lived through WW2.
The working trailblazers, and the homemakers; the brave, frightened, innocent and worldly-wise – all with something in common, an indomitable spirit. From the announcement of war to victory in Europe and declaration of peace.
Some 150 living history stories were collected from women in 2004/5 to celebrate their lives through the dark days of WW2. Many keeping the home fires burning whether taking in nervous refugees, planting for the war, or inventively cooking with severe rationing. Some working for the war in factories, up to their elbows in grease; flying planes to different airfields required; typing in war offices; touring with ENSA to entertain the troops; The dancing, the romance, wedding dresses on vouchers; the loves and losses; and VE Day itself.
A mix of community, and professional performers will evoke a roller coaster of emotions and experience with 40’s music, interwoven as “A String of Pearls”. Never has the past been so pertinent so we shall have Grains of Hope – a youth group from Ukraine with us too.
Location
This performance will be outside in the Parade Ground, so please dress appropriately for the conditions. We will update in case of any inclement weather.
