This Heritage Open Day, come along and learn all about the Nothe Fort Nuclear Bunker and Barbican!
Sunday 14th September 2025 – 10:30am – 4:00pm
Cold War Nuclear Bunker Tours
Join us for talks led by Cold War Researcher, “Bunker Matt”, in the Engine Room.
Talk Times: 11:30am, 12:30pm, and 2:00pm. Bookable on arrival.
Learn about the secret system that was put in place during the Cold War era that enabled a select few to survive a nuclear strike.
Come and join our friendly and knowledgeable team of volunteers for a unique insight into how this much-loved Victorian fort was secretly utilised as a local authority emergency centre during the latter part of the Cold War.
The Barbican
This year, the Fort’s Barbican has reopened to the public. Come and explore how this hidden structure was crucial for defending the Fort’s entrance during a land siege.
The Water Tank

Earlier this year, work was completed on reopening the Fort’s Water Tank for daily visits.
