This Remembrance Installation has been developed over the past two years with Nothe Fort Volunteers and community groups, in partnership with We Are Weymouth UK. This abundance of poppies has been made from recycled plastic bottles, with some members of the community writing a name upon their poppy as a special dedication. Complete with around 3,000 individual poppies, the display will offer a space for personal reflection, to honour those who served and remember their sacrifice. Going forward, we plan to grow this display year on year, through regular workshops with the Nothe Fort Volunteers and increased community engagement.
The display will be officially opened by the Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Kate Wheller, during the Nothe Fort Remembrance Event on Saturday 11th November 2023. The Remembrance Event at Nothe Fort will include an official flag raising with a bugle performance of the Last Post followed by the Nothe Fort Artillery cannon firing, 2-minutes silence and Reveille. The fantastic Bovington Military Wives Choir will then perform a Remembrance set, especially curated for the event.
The event will also be host to the Weymouth Sea Cadets, who will be holding make-and-take activities, where visitors can make their own paracord poppy broches and bracelets (these will also be available to purchase with donations going to the Royal British Legion).
We would like to thank the following groups for their support and contributions towards this event: We Are Weymouth Business, Houseworks CIC, The Veterans Hub Weymouth, 17th Bournemouth Scout Group, Broadstone Women’s Institute, Dorset Council Highways Team, and the general public.
